Creative healing

Art therapy is a form of counseling that can be used to express emotions that are hard to put into words. This form of therapy uses creative activities to help individuals explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior, and reduce stress.

Through creative activities such as drawing, painting, sculpting, and more, art therapy can be used to facilitate self-expression and healing.
Creating Meaning
Art Therapy Examples and the Stories They Tell.
Worry Box: Contained, Not Forgotten
In art therapy, one helpful technique is creating a worry jar or worry box, where clients write down their anxieties on pieces of paper, fold them up, and place them inside. This symbolic act of externalizing worries allows individuals to process and manage their feelings, offering a sense of relief and control.

The jar or box can be decorated and labeled, turning it into a personalized visual reminder of worries that have been addressed or resolved.

In the box pictured, the client glued puzzle pieces to represent the different aspects of life they were struggling with, adding faces with varying emotions to reflect their internal experiences. The box was then sealed shut and bound with wire, symbolizing their intention to keep their worries contained and safe, while still acknowledging and honoring them.
Where the Pain Meets the Page
At first, the colored pencil drawing seemed simple, but it held deep meaning for the client. Initially reluctant to confront the trauma from their childhood, the client created this artwork without fully understanding its significance.

As they explored their drawing with the art therapist, they realized it represented their need to control and compartmentalize everything as a way to cope with the abuse they had experienced as a child.

The structured lines and careful use of color reflected how they tried to manage their emotions and memories. This discovery marked an important step in their healing process, as it helped the client understand themselves and some of the maladaptive ways of coping they had adopted over the years.

This awareness enabled them to make positive behavioral changes and increase their level of healthy functioning in their life.
Trauma Transformed: Growing Through the Hurt
In this art piece, the client used watercolor to paint a heart pierced with painful holes, sharing that each one represented a hurtful memory and experience from childhood. The wounds were raw and open, but instead of staying empty, branches began to grow from them as the client continued to paint. These branches, the client later realized, symbolized their resilience and growth through their trauma. Creating this image helped the client tell their story of how their pain and suffering lead to new growth and personal transformation.
Drawn to Peace: Grounded in Grace and Color
While creating this oil pastel drawing of an angel, the client talked with their therapist about the obstacles they had been facing, and explored the role of their faith and spirituality in getting through difficult times. The act of laying down and dragging the pastels across the paper provided a grounding, sensory experience that helped the client regulate their emotions. This tactile process often allows clients to stay connected while discussing difficult experiences, offering a calming anchor during their emotional exploration.
Wrapped in Expectations: No Room to Be Me
This clay sculpture represents a boy as a hot dog, squeezed tightly between two halves of a bun. The boy expressed to the therapist that he felt like a hot dog in a bun, sandwiched and suffocated between the pressures of his Caucasian adopted family and his African American biological family. Both families wanted him to dress, talk, and act a certain way, creating a constant tension. The sculpture helped him put into words, for the first time, the way he had been feeling—trapped and torn between two identities. It became a powerful symbol of his struggle as an adolescent, trying to navigate conflicting expectations and find his true self.
